Best Ever GCSE Results at College

GCSE results 2016

Cheltenham College pupils and staff are celebrating their best ever GCSE results.

  • 40% of GCSEs were graded A*
  • 70% of GCSEs were graded A*- A
  • 50% of our pupils achieved 5A*s or more
  • 32 pupils gained 7A*s or more
  • 9 pupils achieved 10A*s or more

These results augur particularly well for future success at Oxbridge and other top universities. They reflect the success achieved through College’s core focus on academic achievement that is enhanced by its commitment to a rich co-curricular programme and strong pastoral care.

Mr Simon Brian, Deputy Head Academic said, “These results are indeed pleasing but what I am so delighted to see is the year on year improvement in College’s academic performance.  Six years ago our results were very different, though the profile of our academic intake has changed insignificantly; what has changed has been our focus on excellent academic teaching, setting the highest of expectations for our pupils and constantly evaluating and improving our offer.  Our recent inspection awarded us ‘excellent’ in every category and this set of results endorses this."

A Levels 2016

We are also delighted with the academic performance of our pupils in this year’s A Level examinations. Results are strong; 1 in 3 pupils attained an A* grade, 46% of all grades are A*- A and our top 100 pupils achieved 89% A* - B.

All of our Oxbridge candidates have been successful; they will take up places at Oxford and Cambridge to read Veterinary Medicine, Medicine, History, and Classics.

College is also delighted with the results of the Extended Project Qualification undertaken by the Upper Sixth this year. Over 70% of the results were graded A* and 86% A*-A.

In addition, over 75% of our pupils have been successful in gaining places at Russell Group universities alongside top universities including St Andrews and Bath.

Headmaster, Dr Alex Peterken, said, “Whilst of course exam results are important, in an increasingly complex and mixed economy of examination grading, what is most important is that our pupils are able to go to the university of their choice and that they are equipped with the skills that they need for the next phase of their lives. I am confident that a Cheltenham College education does just that – all our pupils leave College equipped to succeed in whatever field they choose, resilient, independent and able to lead a fulfilled, purposeful and happy life.”
