On 1 May, five College girls played for Cheltenham Hockey Club in the U18 National Plate final at Lee Valley Hockey Centre in London. Despite our coach’s keen attempts to settle our nerves, the team was filled with excitement and apprehension. Walking onto one of the Olympic hockey pitches with the crowd and music blaring was an experience in itself. Having had our names read out and the teams introduced the game began. In the first two minutes, we scored and were then up 2-0 by half time. The second half was more challenging as we were overcome by fatigue. However, we were able to hold off and in the last minute of the game we were awarded a penalty corner and luckily the last touch of the game was the third goal for us! For some of us, we have played in the same team for Cheltenham Hockey Club for nine years so winning the final was the ultimate way to finish what we see as an unforgettable era.

Head of Hockey, Mr Gwyn Williams, commented, “Sport is a fantastic forum to create memories and these girls have certainly been able to leave their junior hockey careers on a high with this unforgettable experience of playing at the Olympic Park and winning a National Final. Just rewards for all their time and effort they have put into their hockey, which they will now take through to university and beyond.”
