Pupils in Year 4 were lucky enough to get their hands on the famous Gold Cup this week – literally! Racing to School, an outreach service to educate the younger generation about horse racing, visited The Prep for the pupils to enjoy an afternoon of fun and interesting facts.
To begin, the group were educated about the history of horse racing and the Gold Cup in particular. The pupils were then given silks to wear for the afternoon. This lead to discussion about the owners, trainers and jockeys.
Splitting into two groups, one group was put through their paces on the 'equicizers', finding out how hard it is to be a jockey and the other group was taught about the life of a jockey. Mr Whybrow made an appearance to get his hands on the Gold Cup, but more importantly he turned to jockey for his go on the equicizer!
The afternoon was a fantastic event and has made the children realise how lucky they are to live in Cheltenham and be able to soak up the history and atmosphere of the Gold Cup. Who knows, maybe there is a future, Gold Cup winning jockey amongst us?
