After coming first in the regional round and finishing the competition unbeaten, the U11 girls hockey team went on to have a hugely successful day at the IAPS National Finals held at Bishops Stortford School in Hertfordshire.
The sporting adventure began the night before when the players, coaches and a small but dedicated parental fan club, all spent an evening at the Premier Inn, Stansted airport! After a good sleep and a hearty hotel breakfast they arrived at Bishops Stortford in good time for a warm up before the group matches kicked off.
The 20 top qualifying teams from the four different regional competitions previously held across the country qualified for the tournament.
The girls got off to the best start possible in their first two group matches (both 5-0 wins), and their confidence began to swell. They played another storming match to beat rivals Millfield, and despite a loss to Junior Kings in a scintillating and closely fought battle, they went on to qualify for the quarter finals as the top placed team in their group. The girls played some fluent and enthralling hockey and before they knew it they had played themselves into the final! Sadly, the St Georges team were just a step too far after an incredibly long day of hockey, and they finished as 'National Runners Up'.
The parents and coaching staff alike are all incredibly proud of their performance. The girls were fit, skilful and determined and they were all perfect ambassadors for Cheltenham Prep.
