All the pupils in Year 6 enjoyed a junk percussion music workshop. The instruments, varying lengths of coloured drainpipes, are struck with a bat - similar to a table tennis paddle - and there were four different sizes of instruments for the children to play on. They learnt various aspects of music, including melody, harmony, ensemble playing, rhythm and improvisation. The success of this type of workshop lies in the fact it is fully inclusive and non-threatening for the pupils. Those who already learn a musical instrument are encouraged to think about the various musical elements involved in the session, those who do not can easily take part learning a sequence of numbers to play instead of notes. The workshop culminated in a performance, and a great day was had by all!
