ITV weather presenter, Helen Plint, visited Lower College to share an insider’s view of what goes on behind the scenes in preparing and presenting weather forecasts. Pupils were particularly interested in the ‘green screen’, effectively a blank studio wall onto which the weather picture is superimposed, which is not visible to the presenter. Instead they rely on seeing the graphics through monitors in the camera studio which mean they do not present to a script, and may have to extend or reduce their report depending on if the programme has finished early or late. They were also interested to hear of the countdown microphones that ensure the broadcast ends at precisely the right moment. Many questions followed the informative talk, relating to technical aspects of production.
