Private Peaceful

Private Peaceful

This year's annual production at Cheltenham Prep was 'Private Peaceful' by Michael Morpurgo. The production had a cast and crew of 50 children from Years 5 to 8.

The play tells the story of the Peaceful family and their life in a rural West Country village during the time leading up to the First World War. Two brothers, Charlie and Tommo Peaceful, sign up for the army as teenage recruits and the play follows their turbulent lives in the trenches from then on. There is both laughter and tears and a harsh reminder of the cruelty of war and its effects on such young lives.

Jill Douglas, Drama Co-ordinator at the Prep commented; "It's a fabulous story that the pupils have really enjoyed. I would describe it as a bit like 'Warhorse', without the horses or the happy ending. We creatd a world of war with sandbags, barbed wire, corrugated metal and a specially contructed floor surface that looks like churned mud."
