On the 15 December, Cheltenham College will host a talk by Rachael Merrison, Records & Heritage Manager, revealing the stories and history behind over 700 alumni that gave their lives during the First World War.
Rachael will share the personal stories of pupils and staff which still resonate 100 years on. She will also be available afterward to answer questions from the audience.
In 2014 Cheltenham College was generously funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund to undertake research into and commemorate the 675 alumni who gave their lives during the First World War, a number which the project can now reveal to be just over 700. The talk at Cheltenham College is just one of many events at National Lottery funded visitor attractions across the UK. Free admission for National Lottery players is a way of saying ‘thank you’ to everyone who has raised money for good causes by buying a lottery ticket.
The talk will be held in College library from 6.00pm on 15 December and admission is free to pupils, parents, staff and anyone presenting a National Lottery ticket or scratch card.
Ros Kerslake, Chief Executive of the Heritage Lottery Fund, said: “December is a wonderful time to experience the UK’s rich, diverse and exciting heritage, which has been transformed by more than £7bn of National Lottery funding since 1994. This talk at Cheltenham College is a small gesture of thanks and a way of giving something back to the people who buy tickets.”
Rachael Merrison, Records & Heritage Manager at Cheltenham College added: “Thanks to National Lottery players we’ve been able to gain a much clearer picture of the former pupils who gave their lives at war. The stories and details we have uncovered are truly inspiring and intriguing and I am delighted to now be sharing them with the public this December."
