The Cheltenham College Archive Department can be found on the top floor of the Centenary/New Block. As the number of archives has grown, so too have the facilities. From the Original Store, we now have two further loft storage areas (the Classical Store and the Modern Store), an Archive Office, and a small classroom which can also be used by researchers.
The Old Cheltonian section from the College Library has been transferred to the Archives. Together with the collection of books already in the Archives, it now forms an extensive library comprising books by (or about ) Old Cheltonians, on the local area, and on schools and education. In 2008 the Archive Department also took over responsibility for the Archives of the Junior School. The enlarged and refurbished Department was opened by Peter Brettell in June 2008.
The Archive Department collects and preserves records relating to College and the Junior School and makes them available for research. As well as official records of Cheltenham College, the Cheltonian Society and the Cheltonian Association, the Archives include personal papers of former pupils, staff and Council members. All aspects of College life are represented and the records take many forms: letters, magazines, minutes, photographs, prints and drawings, programmes, registration forms, etc. There are also various artefacts - including clothing, trophies and drama props - and an increasing number of electronic records. Archive exhibitions are mounted in display cases in several places around Upper College and the Junior School, and are changed regularly.
Researchers are welcome, by appointment. For those unable to visit, initial searches can be undertaken by the archive staff although, for more detailed research, a charge may be made.
If you have, or are aware of, any documents or artefacts relating to College or former pupils, staff or Council members we would love to hear from you. For further information please contact one of the members of the Archive staff:
