What isn’t chemistry? The materials generating this web-page are inherently chemical and give a tiny insight into the technology made possible in the modern world by generations of chemical innovation. It is little wonder that this exciting, fascinating subject is a popular choice with Cheltonians.
Chemistry thrives at Cheltenham College. Chemistry is central to the sciences having natural links in Physics and Biology and being core to the myriad interdisciplinary science courses in the higher education arena. At the College Chemistry is a large and successful department where the pupils – at all levels – enjoy practical work, demonstrations and problem-solving whilst developing scientific skills which pave the way for success in a large range of other subjects. In recent years between 80 and 90 % of our pupils achieved grade A or B at A level.
We follow the IGCSE scheme up to Fifth Form, which forms a strong foundation in analytical science for all pupils and an excellent preparation for those who will study Chemistry at Advanced Level and in their university courses in the future. At A-level pupils follow the OCR scheme, which gives a thorough general background in Chemistry and offers scope for a great deal of hands-on practical work. Further to this, extension lessons are offered to stretch the most able beyond the confines of prescribed syllabi with more ambitious chemical principles as a forerunner to Oxbridge, Ivy League and medical university applications, the demanding and highly respected Chemistry Olympiad examination and not losing sight of the new A* grade at A level. Mock interviews can be arranged with Chemistry specialists from outside for intending undergraduates in the chemical sciences.
A strong team of teachers and technicians are always on hand to enable our pupils to achieve.
