College pupil selected for Athelings

Congratulations to 17 year old Angus Boyd who has been selected to become an Atheling and is now looking forward to shooting for the British Cadet Rifle team.

Around 2,000 cadets nationwide compete in full bore (7.62mm) target rifle shooting, covering schools cadets and single service cadets. From these shooters, a team of only 18 elite shots is selected to represent the country. The team is called The Athelings, meaning young noble.

Angus will now join the Athelings on their August tour to Canada, flying the flag for Cheltenham College alongside our shooting coach, Emma Nuttall. The Athelings have been travelling to Canada for over 100 years (apart from the war years) and the majority of world-class shooters in this country were Athelings in their youth. Being selected for the team is therefore the first step to becoming a Senior GB shot. Shooting is a sport for life and once Angus reaches the level that he is expected to reach (peak performance is reached in the 30 to 40s), he can aim to compete internationally for many years!

Angus, who follows in his brother’s footsteps, has now become the fourth Atheling from Cheltenham College in as many years, an amazing feat in itself. We wish both him, and coach Emma Nuttall, the very best of luck.
