Drama and Theatre Studies

Drama and Theatre Studies is one of the fastest growing departments in the College, with increasing numbers opting to choose it, particularly at A level. Results at A level have been excellent, with 100% A* - B in 2011. AS results have also been impressive with 88% A - B in 2011. Furthermore, a number of recent pupils have also won places at prestigious Drama schools, including RADA. Outside of the classroom pupils have the opportunity to be involved in various school productions during the year, as well as variety shows and House plays.

Our aim is to nuture our pupils’ passion for all things theatrical, as well as to develop and hone talent, whether that be acting, directing or designing. We develop core performance skills alongside an understanding of dramatic genre and the history of theatre itself. We run regular trips to see live performances, from our excellent local theatre in Cheltenham, to further afield in Stratford, London and Bristol, giving pupils a broad experience of a diverse range of theatrical styles and genres.

Drama offers pupils the opportunity to escape beyond the confines of a desk; it stimulates imagination and creativity as well as helping develop invaluable transferable skills. Its benefits are manifold: increased imaginative and presentational skills, a deeper understanding of the value of teamwork - so important in many careers, the strong and enduring satisfaction that comes from successful public performance and applause, the more sensitive appreciation of a respected and ancient literary form through a study of the art of dramatic storytelling.
