Economics and Business Studies

Today, Economics and Business Studies are hot topics. Everywhere you look there are explanations of what is going on in the economy and business organisations. The study of both Economics and Business Studies provides a framework for investigation of issues such as ‘why has the price of second hand cars risen’ and ‘will the merger of Orange and T-mobile really benefit consumers?’

We aim to help pupils acquire the knowledge, understanding and learning skills that allow them to think independently in a rational and methodical way about current economic and business issues. The motto within the department is ‘attitude determines achievement’. We encourage respect for learning and a desire for success.

Through studying Economics and Business Studies at AS and A level, pupils will develop an understanding of current economic and business issues (including the problems and institutions that affect everyday life), learn to explain a variety of real-world phenomena from an economic and business perspective, and learn to analyse, explain and evaluate strengths and weaknesses.

Economics and Business Studies at AS and A2 level requires a reasonable level of numeracy. The main skill that a good economics and business student needs is the ability to analyse data, to interpret graphs and tables, to identify trends, and to explain these using theories. This requires a clear mind and an ability both to think logically and to write good quality English.

Alongside academic studies, we also offer an extensive programme of extra-curricular activities and run a wide range of clinics and extension activities throughout the week.

The Lower Sixth have the opportunity to set up and run their own company through the Young Enterprise Scheme. The venture gives them experience of running a business as well as the vital skills of team building and communication. In addition, each year a team of Upper Sixth Economists take part in the Bank of England’s Target 2.0 competition. The team assumes the role of the Monetary Policy Committee using up-to-date economic data to make a decision on what to do with the interest rate.

Finally, Upper College students have the opportunity to experience the highs and lows of share trading without possibility of losing real money. They take part in the IFS investor challenge groups where they make decisions on when and what to buy and sell, with the aim of making the most money compared with over 1000 teams across the country.
