Syllabus and Examinations

A Level Economics follows the AQA specification and is broken down into 4 units as follows:

Unit 1 (ECON1) - Markets and Market Failure
This unit introduces pupils to microeconomics. Pupils will be required to acquire knowledge and understanding of some basic microeconomic models and to apply these to current problems and issues. Basic microeconomic models such as demand and supply, the operation of the price mechanism, and causes of market failure.

Unit 2 (ECON2) - The National Economy
This unit introduces pupils to macroeconomics. Pupils will acquire knowledge and understanding of AD/AS analysis and use this analysis to explore recent and current economic behaviour. They will understand, and be able to analyse and evaluate, macroeconomic policy. Pupils will acquire a good knowledge of developments in the UK economy and government policies over the past ten years.

Unit 3 (ECON3) - Business Economics and the Distribution of Income
Unit 3 explores further the microeconomic concepts in unit 1. Unit 3 is synoptic. This unit analyses and evaluates more complex microeconomic models in theory of the firm, labour markets and market failure. Pupils will develop an understanding of these concepts within global and European contexts.

Unit 4 (ECON4) - The National and International Economy
Unit 4 explores further the macroeconomic concepts in unit 2. Unit 4 is synoptic. Pupils will develop an understanding of these concepts within global and European contexts.
