Congratulations to two pupils who have been selected to represent the English Prep School Barbarians. Set up to offer the top prep school rugby players in England the chance to compete together at the highest level, the Barbarians team is one of the highest accolades for young rugby players. 11 year olds Tom Stanton and Max Taylor-Baggs were picked out of a field of 80 boys from over 50 independent schools around the country. They were the only Gloucestershire players to be selected, with Cheltenham College Junior School the only school to have more than one player represented.
The trial took place earlier this month at Rugby School in Warwickshire, with the Cheltenham pupils playing for the South West regional squad against representative teams from the South East, the Midlands and the North at both Colt (U11) and U13 level. In addition to being selected for the Barbarians, Tom Stanton, captain of the Cheltenham College Junior School rugby team, was awarded South West player of the tournament. He was presented with a commemorative rugby ball by former England and British Lion, Will Greenwood. Cheltenham pupil Jordan Pemberton also took part in the trial, narrowly missing out on selection but nonetheless putting in a strong performance to represent the South West.
In true Barbarian style, no kicking was allowed in the tournament; just fast, free flowing rugby. Rugby Coach Dick Lewis commented: “The Barbarians trial day was extremely intense and the quality of the players was exceptionally high. Tom and Max thoroughly deserved their selection and although Jordan just missed out, he showed he has the ability to compete at this level. ”
Cheltenham College is renowned for its rugby talent. Earlier this month, two College boys, 18 year oldsPeter Wild and Harry Smart, were selected to play against Ireland in the Independent Schools Barbarians National Squad. The Junior School Colts team meanwhile, has just enjoyed a second consecutive unbeaten season. The determined and skilled youngsters marked up over 500 points, conceding only 51 and enjoying 17 victories out of 17 matches. They now move up to U13 level, with a school rugby tour to France next on their agenda!
