Syllabus and Examinations

Third Form
The emphasis is very much on a solid preparation for IGCSE.  The Geography of Tourism is taught in the Autumn term, looking at the evolution of the world’s largest industry over time and space.  In the Spring we consider the causes and impacts of a full range of Hazards which is an excellent way of including much of the essential physical Geography basics.  Population Issues are considered in the Summer term, completing a comprehensive range of social, economic and environmental concepts throughout the year.  Fieldwork is central to what we do across all years, and Third Form is no exception.  Tourism in Somerset is our theme in October and we focus not just on visiting excellent sites, but also engaging with high level investigative skills of data planning, collection, presentation and analysis.

IGCSE (Edexcel)

In Fourth and Fifth Forms we follow the Edexcel IGCSE in Geography, which offers an exciting challenge that includes traditional earth science but also more contemporary issues based socio-economics.  Fieldwork – both primary and virtual – is incorporated throughout the course and assessed within the single exam at the end of the two years.  There is now NO coursework in IGCSE Geography.  The syllabus is: www.edexcel.com/QUALS/IGCSE/IGCSE09/GEOGRAPHY and topics covered include:

  • River Environments
  • Hazardous Environments
  • Urban Environments
  • Economic Activity and Energy Development and Human Welfare.

AS/A Level (OCR) Upper College geographers follow the new OCR specification, chosen for its excellent range of up to date modules that challenges our Sixth Formers and prepare them well for degrees in Geography and related disciplines beyond College.  The course is split into four simple modules as detailed below and may be taken as an AS (after one year) or a full A Level over two years.
