Hockey has a strong tradition at Cheltenham College with teams regularly making it through to the West and National Finals at both boys’ and girls’ levels in outdoor and indoor competitions. Over the years the College has produced a number of junior internationals at U16, U18 and U21 level for England.
Hockey is the major sport for girls in the Michaelmas Term when we field 4 senior teams, a Colts (Development) team and Junior sides at A. B and C level for Yearlings (U14) and A and B for Junior Colt (U15) level. It is the major sport for boys in the Lent term and we have 6 senior teams, A to C at Colts and A to D at Junior Colts and Yearlings level. The same format is applicable to the Junior school which means our hockey playing pupils train with our hockey coaching staff from Year 3 all the way through to Senior hockey.
The ethos at Cheltenham is to play an exciting brand of attacking hockey, players are encouraged to understand structure whilst develop their own unique style and flair. Each individual hockey player is placed into an enjoyable environment in order for him or her to achieve their own aims. Whether this is to go onto to be an international, play in the 1st XI or represent College, pupils’ experience of hockey here is a positive one and one that they hopefully will take with them in continuing their hockey career after leaving.
College has 2 astro-turf pitches side by side along with an indoor training facility that can also host indoor matches. We are very much committed to providing an all round experience of hockey, both indoors and out. The College has established a link with Cheltenham HC to provide pupils the opportunity to train and play with a National League Hockey Club. There is also an opportunity to tour both in Europe and further afield with recent tours being for the girls to Malaysia and the boys’ to Barcelona.
Richard Lane is our College professional working across both schools, and has an admirable record in international honours. He has been involved with England hockey from U16 level and has represented his country at every age group right up to including his full international cap. We also have committed and experienced members from the teaching staff that are allocated a team for the term both at Senior and Junior schools.
