Hockey has a strong tradition at Cheltenham College. It is a major sport for both girls and boys: in the Autumn Term for girls and in the Spring Term for the boys. Players train three times a week as well as having fixtures on a Saturday.
Both the girls and boys teams compete in the Independent Schools Hockey Leagues and players are provided with an all round experience of hockey, both indoors and out.
Each individual hockey player is given the opportunity to achieve their potential; the training is designed to promote self-learning but also to be enjoyable. In addition to the professional coaching staff, each team has allocated to it an experienced and committed member of teaching staff.
Over the years, College has produced a number of junior internationals at U16, U18 and U21 level for England and Wales.
College has recently invested in two new Astroturf pitches and an indoor training facility that can host indoor matches. This has attracted National Age group squads to use our facilities for their training both at outdoor and indoor hockey. College has established a strong link with Cheltenham Hockey Club to provide pupils with the opportunity to train and play with a National League Hockey Club for both men and women. There is also an opportunity to tour in Europe and further afield, with recent tours to Malaysia (for the girls) and Barcelona (for the boys) taking place.
