House Pots Hockey Win

In what was one of the most exciting games seen for along time, Newick beat Leconfield 5-4 in the Senior House Pots Final. These two teams were evenly matched, with Leconfield the previous holders, having won the trophy for the previous five years. But in a tense and thrilling game, Newick, captained by Harry Smart, scored in the last play of the game to snatch an incredible win.

Newick went ahead mid way through the first half with a well taken goal from Henry Hazell, but shortly afterwards, Leconfield showed how dangerous they could be with two quick goals on the break. Trailing 2-1 at half time, it was important that the Cornflowers scored first, which they did through a fantastic strike from Ned Langlands Pearse. By now, the Newick midfield were beginning to take control, with Jack Smart and Fred Nesbitt controlling play well. Newick soon took the lead with a fantastic strike from Harry Smart of a short corner, but Leconfield continued to look dangerous on the break, and they soon went ahead with two quick goals.

Now trailing 4-3, and with time running out, the tension was high. Guy Mitchell and James Hope pushed forward on the flanks, and Jack Dymoke and Harry Hitchins began to become more influential. Soon Ned Langlands Pearse equalised, pouncing on a loose ball after a series of superb saves from Harry Jaggs, the Leconfield keeper.

Whilst Leconfield sat back, hoping to force penalty flicks, Jack Smart set off on one of his trademark dribbles, forcing yet another save from Jaggs. However, Ned Langlands Pearse was yet again on hand, to score in the last play of the game, ending up with a memorable hatrick. It was a truly memorable game, played in a superb spirit, and with some excellent hockey played by both sides. Congratulations to all the boys for playing with such spirit, determination and skill.
