ICT

Information Communication Technology (ICT)

ICT is ever evolving and at The Junior, we’re evolving right alongside it! Using Apple Mac computers we teach all the essential aspects of the curriculum using a breadth of software – word processing, spreadsheets, desktop publishing, safe and critical use of the Internet and file management.

In addition to this we have a strong emphasis on teaching towards a digital world. Our pupils are encouraged to use digital cameras, both still and video, to record their life and add depth to their learning in all subjects. Animation skills are taught and pupils of all ages love to build models with plasticine and design scenery. Pupils make interactive games whilst learning about writing scripts and websites are designed using both iWeb and, in Year 8, using html coding. Photo manipulation skills are taught and graphic design is studied using both 2D and 3D software.

Control technology is taught from the Foundation stage where they use a variety of remote control toys and role-play technology through to programmable robots at varying levels. Apple Macs are brilliant for creating music, movies and podcasts and many projects involve using the iLife software. Pupils also have opportunities to make their own TV commercials, radio shows and compose music.

Foundation stage pupils experience ICT as part of many areas of the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) programme. From Years 1-5 each pupil has an hour lesson of specific ICT skills each week - this reduces in Years 6-8 to forty minutes. Of course, ICT is integrated into every other subject too, from video weather forecasts in Geography to interactive tours of castles in History.

At all times pupils are encouraged to explore and investigate the software being used to both stretch their understanding and foster confidence in approaching new technology – an essential preparation for their digital future!
