Kingfishers is the Pre-Prep department of the Junior School, taking children from the term after they have turned 3 through to age 7.At age 3, children start in Foundation Stage 1 (KF1S) in the cottage. We then have 2 Foundation 2 (Reception - KF2) classes, 2 Year 1 classes (K1) and 2 Year 2 classes (K2). All the children have use of the school grounds and fields and often use these areas to support their topic work.
Throughout the department we operate a Highscope system that allows each child to choose something that they would like to fit into their day - around the activities class teachers have planned. We appreciate that every child is individual and therefore offer considerable flexibility within our three Foundation Stage classes. Through small classes and our 1:8 teaching ratios all children are able to complete activities in small groups and have high levels of support from staff.
Kingfisher children all receive a broad curriculum to ensure they have all the necessary skills to build upon at a later stage. The Early Years Foundation Stage Framework is followed in our Foundation Classes and The National Curriculum replaces this in Years 1 and 2.
From the age of 3, all children have daily Music and French lessons alongside weekly Games lessons. From Foundation 2 onwards (Reception) all children also have weekly swimming lessons. After school activities are available to Year 2 children and include gardening, sports, ICT and craft. Brownies and skiing clubs are also offered and involve children from Year 2 upwards. Weekly ICT lessons in the ICT suite are part of the Year 1 and 2 timetable.
