Maths staff profiles

Dr Brendan Enright Bsc, PhD, Head of Department

Brendan Enright has been teaching at the College since 1999. He read Mathematics at Hull University and stayed on to complete a Pure Mathematics PhD in the field of Non standard Analysis. During his time at Hull he taught undergraduate Mathematics and it was this experience that led him into full time teaching.

Brendan is fully involved in the sporting life at the College: He runs a Hockey team and is also involved in soccer and golf. Brendan runs the lower College Mathematics Society that has regular speakers from both inside and outside of the College.

Jonathan Card BSc, PGCE, MEd, 2nd in department

Jonathan was educated at Ipswich School and went on to the University of Birmingham, where he completed a degree in Mathematics and Psychology. After some time working in London and completing a ski season he returned to the University of Birmingham to complete a PGCE and a masters in teaching studies.

Jonathan joined the College in September 2009 from Wellington School in Somerset. Where he taught Mathematics and was also a housemaster. Jonathan is a keen sportsman having represented Somerset and Gloucestershire at hockey and enjoys passing on his expertise to the pupils.

Jonathan Morton BEng

Jonathan was educated at Barnard Castle School and went on to complete a degree at Imperial College in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. After a successful career in engineering in the automotive industry and spending 3 years in Paris he completed his PGCE in Worcester University and taught in the state system before moving to Cheltenham College.

Jonathan loves computing and has developed various Internet database systems that are still in use at his old school. He is also responsible for the College timetable.

James Stubbert BEng, PGCE

James was educated at Katharine Lady Berkeley's School in Wotton-Under-Edge, Gloucestershire and went on to Cardiff University, where he completed a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After graduating in 2003 he spent three years working in Engineering for a company that made diesel injectors. During his time there he worked as a Manufacturing Systems Engineer and later as a Supply Chain Project Coordinator.

James then completed his PGCE at Exeter University in 2006/7 before going on to work at Cleeve School in Gloucestershire in 2007, where he taught Mathematics and also became a Head of House and STEMnet coordinator.

James joined the College in September 2010. James is a keen fan of all sports and is taking on the challenge of coaching Rugby at the College as well as continuing his passion for Mathematics and Engineering by starting a new 3rd form Science club. James is also involved with Debating at the College.

Richard Peacock BSc, PGCE

Richard was educated at Homewood School, Kent and went on to Bristol University where he completed a degree in theoretical physics. After graduating he worked for several years as a chartered accountant within the banking and insurance industry.

Prior to Richard embarking upon a career change into teaching, he spent a gap year working in the French and Austrian Alps before completing his PGCE at Bath University. Richard joined the College in 2010. He is a keen musician and sportsman and is actively involved in College soccer, basketball and rowing.

Dr Gillian Anne Ward MEng, PhD

Gill completed an MEng in general engineering at Durham University. She then went on to work as a graduate engineer for British Steel Stainless. She moved to the University of Birmingham to complete a PhD in Power Electronics, designing a multi-kilowatt, high frequency DC-DC converter for industrial use. After this, she stayed on at the University to develop an online masters degree in power electronics. She enjoyed teaching undergraduates at the University, so decided to train as a teacher and has completed two years at Cleeve School, a large mixed comprehensive in Gloucestershire.

Gill has been involved in voluntary youth-work for many years and has amongst other things, set up and run a Duke of Edinburgh Award group. She joined Cheltenham College in September 2011 where she teaches mathematics and instructs in rock climbing.

Mrs Serena Churchill BA, PGCE

Serena was educated at Wispers School, Surrey and went on to Oxford Brookes University to complete a degree in Mathematics and History of Art .

Having worked as a chalet girl in Verbier, Switzerland and later as the chef for Chateau Palmer in Bordeaux, Serena set up her own catering business in London and the Cotswolds.

Whilst bringing up her children, Serena gave mathematics tuition, which led to her career in teaching. She joined Cheltenham College in 2010. Her interests include skiing, sailing, surfing, riding, cooking, art and architecture. She assists with equestrian activities at the College.
