Newick wins Junior House Relays

On the final Friday of what has been an incredibly busy half term, the Newick Juniors again upstaged their Senior counterparts by winning the Junior House Relays.

Captained by Jordan Mullenga Moshi, the Junior side began well, qualifying easily for the sprint relays. In the finals, they came second to a very strong Boyne House side in the 4 x 100m, but, helped by a very impressive rum by Alessandro Tiraboschi, they won the 4 x 200m, before coming 2nd in the 4 x 400. That meant that they had to finish 3rd or higher in the medley relay, where the team must run 400m, 100m, 200m and finally 800m. Coming into the final bend, Newick were lying 4th, but a gutsy sprint to the line from Boy Pelizzoli ensured that the team won by a single point.

The Senior side were always going to find the competition tough, but showed plenty of determination and teamwork in the way they went about their racing. For many, the most anticipated event of the day was the 4 x 400m relay, featuring what some (mainly by the boys concerned!) described as "The Ultimate Dream Team" - Guy Mitchell, Jonny Law, George Barnett and Fred Nesbitt). The race featured some of the most astute tactical racing seen on Reeves for many years, giving Nesbitt the chance to win on the final leg. Unfortunately, he left his infamous 'kick' a little too late, and they only finished 3rd.

However, the day ended superbly, with the team winning the final medley relay. The team were in the lead going into the final 800m leg, ran by Nick "The Machine" Knudsen. Unfortunately, Nick was racing against Seb Cheli (L), who runs the 800m for the College's athletics team. Cheli sat on Knudsen's shoulder for most of the 2 laps, but as he kicked for home, so did Knudsen, and he saw off his younger challenger in a fantastic race for the line.
