Our aims

At Cheltenham College we aim to equip pupils to lead fulfilled and purposeful lives by providing an excellent all-round education founded on Christian principles.

We value pupils as individuals with unique talents and interests, and aim to foster:

  • Intellectual curiosity, academic rigour and the ability to learn independently;
  • Talents and interests beyond the academic, which bring enjoyment and enrichment both to pupils themselves and to others;
  • The knowledge, skills and attitudes to succeed in a complex, fast-changing, multi-cultural society, with compassion, sound judgement and integrity;
  • Spiritual, moral and aesthetic awareness and a breadth of understanding;
  • Commitment to the service of others and a readiness to contribute to the common good with respect for people and the environment.

Within the overarching aims of the 3-18 College as a whole, the Junior has the following specific objectives:

  • to lead the way in the preparatory school world providing a broad based, but clearly academic education that prepares children for the 21st Century.

By ‘leading’ we mean the Junior being well known and respected for each of the following:

  • Excellence in the classroom: teaching and learning
  • Breadth outside the classroom: extra and co-curricular programmes
  • Nurture of and care for individual pupils: pastoral care

The Junior believes in ‘academic excellence’ for all pupils. ‘Academic’ describes excellent teaching and learning. The Junior welcomes pupils of all abilities and will provide all pupils the opportunity to fulfil their academic potential. Pupils are encouraged to aspire to be the ‘best they can be’. The pursuit of academic excellence is combined with excellent pastoral care and a dynamic extra-curricular programme which provides a breadth of opportunities for all.
