’Outstanding’ Boarding Report

Ofsted has rated College as ‘outstanding’, the highest rating a school can receive. This success comes on the back of the Junior School also achieving ‘outstanding’ in its own Ofsted Boarding Inspection last term.

Highlights of the report include College’s strength in pastoral care and individual support, describing the College’s community as ‘vibrant and inclusive’. Boarding accommodation was found to be of a ‘high standard’ and high praise was given to the College’s boarding staff for providing an extremely high level of care and also for ensuring that boarders are ‘well prepared for their boarding experience before they arrive’. The provision of individual support was identified as a key factor in building ‘a culture of mutual respect’ and also praised was the ‘large emphasis on discussion, openness and transparency’.

According to both pupils and Inspectors, relationships between pupils and staff were’ one of the best things about the school’. The Junior School was similarly praised in its Inspection report for excellent staff/pupil relationships.

Further commendation was given to the ‘exceptionally high quality of the food provided’, the College’s ’superb facilities’ and ’the wide range of extra-curricula activities and after-school clubs on offer’. The report also praised the ’strong emphasis on community service’ and endorsed the Headmaster’s drive to increase a sense of ownership amongst the pupils, commenting that they are able to ’contribute their views to the operation of the school in a wide variety of ways which are ever increasing.’ Also praised was the way in which ‘pupils are encouraged to be tolerant and respectful and to contribute positively to society.’

Headmaster Dr Alex Peterken commented: “This report highlights the exceptionally high quality of our pastoral care at Cheltenham College. To be awarded ‘outstanding’ status is a testament to all the hard work and commitment of our staff and our focus remains on offering our pupils the best possible all-round education. I am also extremely proud of our pupils, who fully deserve the Inspectors’ consistently glowing commendations. They are a real credit to both themselves and College.”
