NATIONAL SENIOR OUTDOOR TOURNAMENT FINALISTS. Our senior A team ( Ludo Ephson, Thady Duff, Juan Jose De Alba and Amelia Scott-Hopkins ) were finalists in the Senior Outdoor National Tournament. They were very narrowly beaten by Stowe College with a score of 4 goals to 4.5. The senior girls team was unable to defend its National title this summer due to bad weather cancelling play.
The College Polo Club has a large membership of highly talented individuals who are passionate about their sport and very committed. We welcome not only the very experienced players however, but also the complete beginner. Captains for this year are as follows:
Boys’ captain - Jack Severn
Club captain - Charlie Dee
Girls’ captain - Philippa Coull
Membership is open to all year groups and at present we have at least 3 or 4 members from each year. A minibus transports players up to the Longdole Polo Club on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon for a one hour lesson given by the first class coaches at the club. The Longdole Polo Club is only a 15 minute drive away from College. This short distance makes polo playing at Cheltenham College even more attractive, as most schools have to make a fairly lengthy journey in order to reach their polo fields.
Polo ponies are supplied by the club but it is possible to bring your own pony and indeed a few of our members do just that. Lessons cost £45 per session and there are additional charges for matches etc. Most of the matches are played on a Sunday in the spring and summer terms either in the arena or out on the polo fields, depending on the season. Cheltenham College plays against many schools and has an excellent reputation. We participate in many of the tournaments run by SUPA, as well as our own inter school fixtures and we also have a number of training/coaching matches.
One of the highlights of the season is the College Polo Invitation Day v Eton at Cirencester Park Polo Club. This event will take place next year on Saturday 9 June and allows us the opportunity to watch some of our most talented Cheltonian polo players from both the past and the present. All are welcome and more details will follow.
