In College we offer all three Classical subjects: Latin and Greek to A2 level and - for the first time this year - Classical Civilisation to GCSE level.
In some respects the Greeks and Romans were very like us, with fears, ambitions, hatreds, and human passions; in other respects they were poles apart, enjoying gladiatorial fights to the death, having slaves to do the hard work and a magnificent self-confidence.
Among their writings we see the first western drama, oratory, philosophy and history. Epic reaches a form we recognise in Homer and Virgil while letters, love poetry and satire give close insights into everyday life.
In the Third Form, all pupils study either Latin or Classical Civilisation. They can then choose to continue with that subject, or take a combination of classical subjects at GCSE. Latin and Greek are available to those who have studied Latin in Third Form, whilst Classical Civilisation is an option open to all. This year, 65% of the year group picked a Classical subject. We enjoy excellent College trips and expeditions, with a trip to Greece planned for Easter 2012.
Please do have a look at our syllabus and exams section for more information on our different subjects.
