Sixties Day

Sixties Day

It is becoming an annual event – Year 5 start their study of History this year with themselves and work backwards through time. Having examined the History of the school, we move back to the Sixties. We have looked at the toys, the money, the television programmes, the cars, the fashions and many more things from this period. On Saturday, all of this came together with Sixties Morning. All the staff were dressed appropriately – look at the picture gallery to see their choices, and the children were asked to dress in some Sixties style clothing. Many parents had helped them make flared trousers – I like Oscar’s Union Jack version, there were wigs galore (was my hair really that long? Unfortunately yes!), CND badges proliferated and all had made a tie-dye shirt the previous week, so all had something to wear. They were entertained with work on Pop Art, picture frame making, dance classes and some original programmes from the time. All thoroughly enjoyed themselves and thanks to Mr Lewis, Mrs Bond, Mrs Upton and Mrs Barrett for their efforts to make this a great morning.

Below are some of the children’s observations: -

Everyone walked into the building with their flairs, glasses, tie-dyed T-Shirt. Austen Powers (Mr. Lewis) was there – he showed us Thunderbirds though we did think he might show us his own movie. With Mrs. Upton, we did some funky dances and then created our own in about 10 minutes. With Mrs. Barrett, we made our own poster, with our pictures going in the middle of the page. (Ollie I)

Everybody turned up, wigs and all,
Jonnie wore some big glasses; I’m surprised he didn’t fall.
Peace signs, baggy trousers they were all there,
Including all the wigs and necklaces, you couldn’t see their hair.

Mr Lewis turned up as Austen Powers,
Mrs Upton had a dress of flowers,
Mrs Bond did the 60’s art and painting,
If the Beatles were there, girls would be pointing. (Robin H)

Mrs Upton was doing the dancing – we did the hand jive, the fly, the swim, the Twist, the shuffle and many more. (Poppy P and Ashton B)

Pop Art was with Mrs Bond. We looked at the end of the war, chill out and flower power. (Alastair L-P)

Attached is a poem that James wrote about the morning. Click here to see this.
