There are some sporting contests that will live long in the memory: Liverpool's epic Champions League Final comeback against AC Milan, or Manchester United's comeback against Bayern Munich in 1999... Or Federer vs Nadal in the Mens' Final of Wimbledon in 2007. There is nothing more exciting than watching two sporting greats lock horns and do battle on the greatest stages of them all.
It is in these terms that the Newick House Table Tennis Final 2011 will long be remembered, a gargantuan battle
between two masterful exponents of the micro racket game. The Venue: Newick House Common Room; The Time: 8.45pm, Tuesday 22nd March; The Protagonists: Jonny Law vs Henry Hazell.
First to enter the fray, to dimmed lights and hushed expectations, came Hazell, our stylish, Welsh contender who had seen off the powerful Wand only the week before. Next came Law, arriving to his own unique signature tune, and wearing the socks of his beloved Preston North End. The noise of the partisan crowd was explosive: the Law fans, cheering from "The Shed", all guttural and plosive; then the Hazell posse, more cultured praise sounding from "The Salon". Two opponents, two styles, one trophy.
Game on.
First game - dominated by the rangy Law forehand, flirting with the net cord with nearly every shot, but oozing power and precision. Hazell had no answer. 1 - 0 to Law.
Second Game - a Hazell recovery, looking at every opportunity to attack the Law backhand, but Law remained solid and focused, those whipped forehands still proving too much for his younger opponent. 2 - 0 to Law.
Third Game - tension rising. Law's backhand begins to come under pressure, and finds the net cord. Hazell takes unprompted drinks break. Controversial? It seems to irritate Law - is he rattled? Suddenly Law becomes defensive. Hazell strikes. 2 - 1 to Law.
Fourth Game - prodigious support. "The Shed" rediscover their voice to back their man, but it has no effect. Now Hazell's class begins to show; subtle changes of pace and angle, keeping Law out of his comfort zone. The game is easily won. 2 -2.
Final Game - Epic scenes of Homer-esque proportions. Hector and Achilles fighting it out. The crafty Hazell battling the ever pugnacious Law. At 19 - 19, the tension is almost unbearable. Law then nets: 20 - 19 to Hazell. Incredible rally, great shots from both, until eventually Law goes long. 21 - 19 to Hazell. He wins 3 - 2.
Amidst unbelievable celebrations, Mr Llewellyn first thanked Ollie Thornley for organising such a fantastic tournament, in which every boy, Housemaster, Housemaster's wife, resident Tutor and Matron took part. He then congratulated Jonny Law for giving such a good performance, before finally handing over the coveted Newick House Table Tennis trophy to Henry Hazell. Incredible scenes.
