Tayo Aluko to perform at College

On Monday 26th April at 8.00pm in Big Classical, College will be hosting 'Call Mr Robeson', an award winning play written and performed by Tayo Aluko about the life and political activism of the famous black American singer Paul Robeson.

Robeson is probably best remembered for his rich bass voice, especially his renditions of 'Ol Man River' and other Negro spirituals, but he was also involved in the Civil Rights movement and inevitably accused of Anti-American activities - his radical views even bringing him into conflict with those he was working with.

Tayo Aluko captures Robeson's political and emotional influence in this powerful performance of both words and music. He has just returned from a highly acclaimed tour of USA and Canada, and is performing at the Brighton Festival in May.

We are delighted to welcome him to Cheltenham College and hope very much that you will join us for his performance which is free to all parents, friends, staff and pupils. Not only is it a magnificent theatrical cross-curricular opportunity for Music, Drama, History and General Studies Departments but general cultural interest for everyone. All are welcome - simply turn up on the night!

For those interested in a Double Bill, Tayo Aluko is performing a different show - 'I Got a Home in Barack' the previous evening (Sunday April 25th) at Postlip Hall - a musically illustrated journey from Africa to the White House in which Robeson also, of course, appears. Please click here for more information.
