The outbreak of war

World War Two arrives at the Junior

Following Saturday’s wartime cookery activity on Tuesday Year 5 were privileged to have a visit from historical re-enactor and expert Kevin Hicks. Before break Kevin kept the children engrossed with recollections of his family during the Blitz. Topics such as rationing, evacuation, the Dambuster Raid and the Dunkirk evacuation were brought to life by his absorbing anecdotes.
After break Kevin changed roles and donned the uniform of an SS officer. He explained the causes of the Second World War from a German perspective. In his role as an SS officer Kevin demonstrated how Hitler was able to rise to power and engineer the chilling excesses executed by the Nazi party. Throughout the session the children were involved with Kevin demonstrating his encyclopaedic knowledge in answering their questions.
