Pupils in Year 7 and 8 are members of Upper School. Each pupil has a class tutor who checks that they are keeping on top of their studies and encourages and supports them in their learning. To help the children settle into their new classes at the start of the academic year, we run a dedicated team-building day on the very first day of the Autumn Term. As pupils do join us from other schools at this time, it enables them to adapt quickly to the busy and exciting life of The Junior.
In Upper School there is, of course, a natural increase in the level of work required from the children as they embark on the two year Common Entrance Syllabus. The core subjects of Maths, English and French are taught in sets. There is also the special Scholar’s class created and run for those taking the Scholarship examinations.
Our pupils’ records in Common Entrance and Scholarship exams are excellent in all academic and non academic subjects. The children are very well prepared for both Cheltenham College and a number of other leading independent schools.
Pupils enjoy entering Upper School for numerous reasons including the change to the uniform, privilege time and the Common Room. In Year 8 children are selected to hold positions of responsibility and become captains of sport. There is also the excellent post Common Entrance programme, in which the children have the chance to try a range of exciting activities. In the past these have included taking part in a refuelling flight with the RAF, helping with conservation work on Leckhampton Hill, rowing and organising a charity tabletop sale.
