Victory for College Squash Team

For the third successive year, the Cheltenham College Squash Team has triumphed in the National Schools Trophy Finals. These were held at the National Squash Centre in Manchester as part of the Schools National Championships on 14 March.

Having progressed easily through the first rounds, the College team, consisting of Harry Brothwood (15), Hugo Chambers (15), Jamie Jamieson-Black (14), Adrian Montagu (15), Boy Pelizzoli (14) and Sami Weyers (14), proceeded to dominate the semi- finals, emerging victorious 5 games to 0 against RGS Guildford.

The final itself however, provided ample opportunity for the team to test their metal against a strong team from Barnard Castle School. Tensions were running high as initial games led to a tie of 2-2 before the Cheltenham team broke through to win the final game 11/9. Boy Pelizzoli was heralded a“hero” by the English Squash and Racketball club for his excellent performance, playing on despite breaking his racket mid match. A special mention also goes to Adrian Montagu, who in addition to playing No 1 for the U15s, played all six U19 matches and remained unbeaten!

Coach and Master of Squash, Alan Deadman, commented: “The games were all hugely competitive and fast paced and the boys deserve full praise for their strong performance. Despite the pressures, they conducted themselves impeccably both on and off court and were a credit to Cheltenham College.”

The National Schools U15 Boys Trophy Event is held yearly and provides a setting for young people to get involved in competitive Squash and Racketball.
