Women’s right to education

On Monday 7th March, Madeleine Parsley (L6 Westal) went to Westminster City Hall to take part in a conference on women’s rights to education. Held by the National Institute for Adults Continuing Education (NIACE), the conference marked and celebrated International Women’s Day centenary.

For the past year, Madeleine has been a young researcher with a youth organisation called the Young Foundation. She has been researching young people’s views on education and employment for a government publication which will be released in due course. The Young Foundation actively promotes the voices of young people and asked Madeleine to represent them at the event. There were approximately 100 people of all ages and genders, all with different experiences and involvement in education. Throughout the day delegates were encouraged to share their aspirations for the future of women’s education in the hope of creating a manifesto promoting the improvement of women’s learning. As Madeleine was representing the Young Foundation she spoke on a panel with two other participants about her experiences of education, why she thought education was important, what her research had found and what she would like to see promoted or changed in education.

Not only was the event an incredibly positive experience for Madeleine but she made a worthwhile contribution to NIACE’s work. It’s fantastic to see our young people making a difference.
