Year 3 Cheltenham Trail

Year 3 Cheltenham Trail

On Tuesday morning the whole of Y3 set off to follow ‘The Cheltenham Trail’, ably led by Cheltenham’s font of all knowledge, Mr Maddock. We learned so much about the history & geography of our town- it is such a fascinating place! Despite the chilly wind, we enjoyed the sunshine and walked our little legs off!
Here are some interesting facts we picked up along the way:

“Posh people never saw their back yards. They only went through the front.”- Ben N
“People bricked up their windows to avoid window tax.”- Madelyn G
“Big houses had a servant called a ‘tweenie’ who went between upstairs and downstairs.”- Solly W
“If you rode your bike through the churchyard you were fined £5.”- Max P
“The more important servants lived in the bottom of the house.” – Matilda D B
“I know that Cheltenham’s motto is ‘ Salubritas et Eruditio’ (Health and Education). It was a really impressive piece of history.” -Duncan P
“The Town Hall was built in 1901. The finishing touches were added in 1902.”- Saxon C
“I cannot imagine living in a house with such tiny windows and doors!”- Christabel H
“I like the idea of being taken to the front of the town hall in a carriage to listen to a show. “- Megan M
“I think that life as a poor person during the Georgian period must have been hard. “- Sophie M
“When they threw their toilet waste out of the window they shouted ‘gardeloo! To warn people underneath”.- Katie H
