Year 6 at South Cerney
Tuesday afternoon proved to be a very blustery one, but despite this 43 intrepid Year 6s departed for their team building at South Cerney. There would be a chance to either raft build or sail canoes. Normally they would be dragon boat racing but the water was far too choppy for that.
On arrival, the children were split into groups, a mixture of boys and girls as well as different forms. They changed and were quickly kitted out with waterproofs, buoyancy aids and safety helmets. The three groups who were raft building were transported to the far side of the lake where they began their task of constructing a raft using 6 barrels, 8 wooden poles of varying lengths and 16 lengths of ropes. If you want to know how they built their stable rafts, I am sure a member of year 6 would be happy to tell you how to do it. The final two groups made their way around the lake where each group had three canoes lashed together. Their task was to sail these canoes across the lake in a race. One group used a series of flags tied between two poles and the other group had a parachute. It was amazing how fast the respective boats moved.
The afternoon was rounded off with a dip in the lake. Those feeling brave enough were led to the end of the jetty, where one at a time they jumped into the water and swam to the shore. A great time was had by all.
