For January 2025 Cheltenham College seeks to appoint a well-qualified, part-time Teacher. The post-holder will teach English across the ability range up to A Level and form part of a ten-teacher, well-resourced department where grades are consistently high and students go on to read English at Oxbridge. The part-time Teacher of English will teach 18 lessons per week (0.66 FTE).
We might be able to consider applications for January to August on a fixed-term. Do contact recruitment@cheltenhamcollege.org if you would like to discuss this option.
The Department
The English Department thrives upon a collective passion for literature. A genuine sense of delight and excitement infuses and energises lessons and activities in and outside the classroom.
In Lower College, all pupils study both English Literature and Language. Through the former, pupils explore a wide range of poetry, prose and drama. In English Language pupils are encouraged to develop a personal written style, and to communicate with an awareness of the audience being addressed. Pupils at College study CIE English Literature IGCSE and Eduqas English Language GCSE.
We offer a number of English co-curricular activities including a Literary Society, the local Cheltenham Literature and Poetry Festivals, and regular theatre trips. Furthermore, authors, speakers and workshop groups are regularly invited into College to give pupils a fresh perspective on the texts they are studying.
Working at Cheltenham College
As staff, we enjoy the very wide range of activities that our pupils enjoy, with access to wonderful sports facilities for you and your family, a beautiful Common room, Library, full IT provision, a thriving staff consultation committee and many staff social events. You will also have a tailored professional development programme and extensive support from our dedicated HR team.
Whilst we may seem a large organisation, we operate very much as a close community with a family feel. As a new member of staff you will find that our focus lies very much in developing you as an individual. Just as we expect you to go the extra mile for your pupils, we will engage with your own professional and personal development from the start. We will ensure that you enjoy and feel valued in your new role as quickly as possible.
In addition to teaching their subject(s), members of Common Room are expected to act as tutors, be attached to day or boarding Houses and will wish to contribute to College’s rich co-curricular programme.
