School Governor / Council Member

Date Posted: Tuesday 19 July 2022

Vacancy Type: Part-Time

Closing date for application: 31/08/2022

We are a leading independent boarding & day school located at the heart of the Cotswolds. We educate boys and girls from the ages of 3 to 18 years old, at Cheltenham Prep, and then at our senior school, Cheltenham College.

Our aim, above all, is to inspire young people who are willing to learn, ambitious to achieve and keen to get involved. Boys and girls who join College at any age, will leave us as well-rounded young men and women, having fulfilled their true potential. They will have been prepared for life beyond school and be ready to contribute positively to society.

The Council is the name given to the governing body of College by the Cheltenham College Act 1894, the document that established the basis of our organisation as we know it today. Council’s role is clearly focused on governance: setting the strategic direction, vision, and values of Cheltenham College.  Members of Council are charity trustees as well as being governors of the schools.

The Council provides balance between the two schools ensuring that the needs and aspirations of each are properly considered whilst at the same time providing leadership that has the interests of Cheltenham College as a whole (College and The Prep) at its heart.

The strength of our Council lies in the blend of talents, skills, and experience of its volunteer members and particularly in their ability to work together as a team.  You can find out more about the College Council here.

We are keen to hear from prospective members from wide range of backgrounds and those with professional qualification and experience in the law and/or property will be of particular interest.

Regular attendance at formal Council meetings is a core expectation and these will often take place during weekday evenings or at weekends.  Other College events, as well as preparation for Council meetings, mean that prospective members need to be able to commit the equivalent of at least 6 days a year.  Council membership is voluntary and unremunerated although legitimate expenses incurred on Council business will be reimbursed.

In the first instance, we request that interested parties contact John Champion, Secretary to Council, by email to arrange a time to discuss the role of a Council member in more detail: j.champion@cheltenhamcollege.org.
