HM Forces Families
Cheltenham College has been supporting families serving in the British Armed Forces since 1841. To continue this legacy, today’s HM Forces families who are in receipt of the CEA pay only 10% of the fees for children who are boarding.
We offer full boarding from age 7 (Year 3) through to age 18 (Year 13) and military families who are in receipt of the CEA only pay 10% of the fees. Our pupils move seamlessly from Year 8 in The Prep School to Year 9 in College where they continue their educational journey through to Sixth Form.
Cheltenham Prep School (ages 3 to 13)
With around 40 Full Boarders, more than half of which have parents serving in the British Armed Forces , Cade House – the Prep School Boarding House – is a kind and caring home where every weekend is bustling and busy. Our boarders are aged between 7 and 13 years old.
A typical weekend involves Sport fixtures on a Saturday morning, followed by lunch and an afternoon of activities and trips. The evening is spent together in House – popular events include movie nights, bingo, House quiz, silent discos and more! Sundays are a lovely family day in the Boarding House.
Children have an easy start to their day with a pyjama breakfast. This is followed by a Sunday activity, such as Crazy Golf, cinema trips, climbing walls, GoApe, Aquaventure, Ninja Warrior, Thorpe Park and many more. We always work hard to put together a programme of activities and we encourage our boarders to help choose activities so they are involved from the start.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if my child is missing home?
At some point every child misses home. The Boarding House staff are very experienced in supporting children who feel like this. After a chat with House staff and their friends in House and a busy weekly schedule, they soon feel better.
What happens if my child is unwell or needs to attend regular medical appointments?
We have a Health Centre on campus with Nurses, Mental Health Practitioners, and two GPs. For external hospital or dental appointments, a member of staff can chaperone your child.
How do parents stay informed about how their child is getting on?
You are welcome to contact the Boarding House at any point on prep.boarding@cheltenhamcollege.org. There is a weekly newsletter, ‘Prep Connected’ emailed to parents every Friday afternoon, and this includes highlights from the past seven days across The Prep community. Our Instagram accounts, @cheltprep and @cadehousecc are updated weekly and are a great way of seeing what the boarders are up to.
How are boarders supported with homework?
All homework is finished either during the school day or in after school clubs. However, if children need extra help with their homework, Cade House staff are always happy to support them.
What is the after school routine in House?
At 5pm, children sign into House and change into home clothes, put any uniform/sports kit in the laundry, and then enjoy some down time: playing games, relaxing in their dorms, playing outside. After-school clubs take place between 5pm and 6pm, followed by supper (6pm) and a House meeting (6.45pm).
What are the weekend activities?
Weekend activities range from Laser Tag, Theatre trips and zorbing to cinema, bowling and more!
Cheltenham College (ages 13 to 18)
80% of our 730 pupils are boarders and so our boarding is a genuine Home from Home where pupils can study, relax, hang out with friends and enjoy all that College offers. Our boarders are 50:50 boys and girls and aged between 13 and 18 years old.
We have 9 boarding Houses and 2 day Houses and this includes six boys’ Houses and five girls’ Houses. All are located around the perimeter of the campus. Each House is led by a Housemaster or Housemistress who is resident in the House, something that helps to create a warm, family environment. They are supported by a team of resident and non-resident tutors and matrons.
Every House is a small, close-knit community and has a distinctive character all of its own. Each House has an equal amount of year groups within it, with pupils of all ages socialising, mentoring and supporting each other throughout College life. This creates an environment that helps pupils who are missing home and encourages strong friendships while also fostering a deep sense of House honour and loyalty.
