Top 10 Tips for Starting Cheltenham Nursery School

Starting at Cheltenham Nursery School is an exciting milestone for both children and their families. It’s perfectly normal to feel a few nerves, but with a little preparation, your child’s transition can be a happy and positive experience.

Jules Dowd, Head of Nursery at Cheltenham Prep, shares her top tips to help your child feel confident and ready for their first day.

1. Visit Before They Start

Attend one of our Open Mornings or arrange a visit so your child can become familiar with Cheltenham Nursery School and meet our friendly, experienced team.

2. Join a Fun Friday

Our Fun Friday sessions are a wonderful opportunity for your child to explore the Nursery School, meet future classmates and build confidence before they start.

3. Talk Positively About Nursery

Read books about starting nursery and chat about the exciting experiences they’ll enjoy being part of Cheltenham Prep, from making friends to exploring through play.

4. Encourage Independence

Practise everyday skills such as using the toilet, washing hands, putting on a coat, using cutlery and carrying their own bag.

5. Prepare Their Bag

Include spare clothes, clearly labelled belongings and, if needed, a comfort item, such as a soft toy or blanket, to help your child feel secure as they settle.

6. Maintain a Consistent Morning Routine

A consistent morning routine can make a big difference to how your child feels about starting Nursery School. Keeping mornings calm and predictable before and after they begin helps children know what to expect, making the transition feel more familiar and reassuring.

7. Keep Goodbyes Short

A smile, a hug and a reassuring goodbye helps children settle more quickly. Our experienced Nursery team will be there to welcome, comfort and support both your child and you.

8. Reassure Them We’re Here to Help

Remind your child that all the adults at Cheltenham Nursery School are there to help, whether they need assistance with a zip, an activity or simply a reassuring smile.

9. Celebrate Every Success

Ask your child about their favourite part of the day and celebrate every achievement, no matter how small. These moments help build confidence and a love of learning.

10. Enjoy the Journey

Every child settles at their own pace. At Cheltenham Nursery School, we take the time to get to know every child as an individual, ensuring they feel safe, happy and excited to begin their learning journey.
