Assistant Head of Sport Joins Wales at Hockey World Cup

Cheltenham College congratulates Assistant Head of Sport and Head of Hockey, Gwyn, on his role with the Wales Men’s National Hockey Team at the 2026 Hockey World Cup.

The tournament marks only the second time in Wales’ history that the men’s team has qualified for the Hockey World Cup, representing a significant achievement for Welsh hockey.

Speaking ahead of the competition, Gwyn highlighted the extraordinary commitment shown by the squad, whose dedication extends far beyond what happens on the pitch. Alongside training and international competition, players balance full time careers, family life and the demands of representing their country at the highest level.

Unlike every other nation competing at the tournament, Wales’ players are entirely self funded. Each athlete is expected to contribute up to £3,500 towards the cost of competing, making Wales the only self funded team among the world’s top hockey nations.

Despite these challenges, the squad continues to demonstrate exceptional commitment, united by the pride of representing Wales on the international stage.

To help make their World Cup campaign possible, the Wales Men’s National Hockey Team has launched a crowdfunding campaign. Donations of any size, prize contributions and introductions to potential supporters are all welcomed and will help the players realise their ambition of competing at the very highest level.

Cheltenham College wishes Gwyn and the entire Wales squad every success at the World Cup and encourages the College community to support their fundraising efforts.
