HRH The Princess Royal Presents New Colours to Cheltenham College CCF
On Monday 14 September 2026, Cheltenham College marked an historic occasion as Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal presented new Colours to the Cheltenham College Combined Cadet Force (CCF) during a special Service of Dedication and Thanksgiving in the College Chapel.
The presentation of Colours is a rare and prestigious tradition, symbolising identity, service, duty and the enduring values. The ceremony also marked the retirement of the previous Colours, which had served the College since their presentation by Her Royal Highness in 2000, making the occasion particularly significant for the College community.
Cheltenham College holds a unique place in British educational and military history as the first non-military school to be granted official Military Colours by the Sovereign. The honour was bestowed in 1921 in recognition of the service and sacrifice of Old Cheltonians during the First World War. More than a century later, the presentation of new Colours reflects the enduring strength of the College’s cadet tradition and its ongoing commitment to developing leadership, resilience, integrity and service in young people.
The service brought together pupils, staff, governors, Old Cheltonians, military representatives and invited guests to celebrate the College’s distinguished heritage while looking confidently towards the future. Prayers were offered in remembrance of all those who have served under the Colours, and for the current and future generations of cadets who will uphold the values they represent.
Following the service, members of the College community had the opportunity to meet Her Royal Highness and mark the significance of the occasion. A particularly memorable moment came as pupils from Cheltenham Prep School gathered to bid farewell to The Princess Royal, presenting her with a bouquet of flowers and a Cheltonian scarf in a gesture that was warmly received.
Chris Townsend, Head of Cheltenham College, said:
“It was a tremendous honour to welcome Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal to Cheltenham College for this historic occasion. The presentation of new Colours is both a celebration of our proud heritage and a powerful symbol of the values that continue to guide our cadets and our whole community. We are deeply grateful to Her Royal Highness for presenting the Colours and for helping us mark this important chapter in the College’s history.”
The new Colours will serve as a lasting symbol of the Cheltenham College CCF and the commitment of its cadets to serve others. Carried on parade and displayed at significant occasions in the years ahead, they will stand as a reminder of the service, dedication and sense of purpose that have long been hallmarks of the Cheltenham College community.
