Excellent 2026 EPQ Results

84% of pupils achieved A*-B grades as the Extended Project Qualification continues to foster independent research and academic curiosity.

Cheltenham College is celebrating another successful year in the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), with pupils achieving excellent results.

In 2026, 84% of pupils achieved grades A*-B, while 54% were awarded A*-A, maintaining the strong performance seen in recent years.

Completed by all Lower Sixth pupils, the EPQ gives students the opportunity to undertake an independent research project on a topic entirely of their own choosing. Over two terms, pupils develop critical thinking, research, analysis and project management skills that are invaluable preparation for university and beyond.

The breadth of topics explored is one of the programme’s greatest strengths. Recent projects have ranged from designing architectural models for assisted-living accommodation to investigating the relevance of the Geneva Convention and the under-diagnosis of pain in female patients.

The qualification is also increasingly recognised by universities. This year, Cheltenham College pupils received over 100 reduced university offers as a result of their EPQ achievements, with institutions including Reading, Exeter, Cardiff and Birmingham among those acknowledging the value of the qualification.

As universities place greater emphasis on independent learning, research skills and intellectual engagement beyond the classroom, the EPQ continues to play a key role in preparing Cheltenham College pupils for success in higher education and future careers.
