Cheltenham College Returns to the Copenhagen Cup in Style
We arrived at Guards on Saturday to glorious sunshine, with Windsor Great Park in full bloom. The drive through its verdant avenues made it feel almost like a leisurely day out—until we saw “Cheltenham College” proudly displayed on the entry sign. After a 10-year hiatus from the Copenhagen Cup, we were back—and back as serious contenders.
The competition was fierce, with top schools like Harrow, Eton, Wellington, Radley, and Millfield all in the lineup across the Cup and Shield. You might have expected some nerves, but the only one showing signs was the teacher! The boys took everything in their stride, calmly organising the horses, leaving it (typically) to the last minute to change into their whites before heading straight into action.
Saturday’s match saw me flanked by a group of relaxed and highly engaged fathers, providing helpful (and entertaining) sideline commentary. By the end of the second chukka, things were looking tense. But a calm word from George, “just play our game”, turned it around, and we secured an excellent win against Radley.
Sunday brought the final and an electric atmosphere. This time, the mums were out in full support, and the team was buoyed by a strong crowd and an impressive support crew. We faced a determined Stowe side in a four-chukka final that was fast-paced, full of action, and not short of drama. The commentary was professional, the crowd excited, and the ponies plentiful. Wilf’s daring equestrian acrobatics had everyone on edge—and my nerves completely shredded.
Despite a valiant effort, the final didn’t go our way. But that’s polo. I couldn’t have been prouder to be standing with the pink and blue team, who showed sportsmanship and skill that would rival seasoned professionals.
A huge thank you to our fantastic four: George, Hari, Hector, and the remarkable 15-year-old Wilf. Bravo, boys!
