History of Art Trip to Italy 2025

College pupils explore the masterpieces of Florence and Rome

Sixteen Upper College Art Historians set off on a cultural journey to Florence and Rome, returning inspired and awed by Italy’s artistic treasures.

In Florence, pupils explored the Medici Chapel in the Palazzo Medici, admired Michelangelo’s David in the Accademia, and Botticelli’s Birth of Venus in the Uffizi. A scenic train ride then brought the group to Rome, where the striking postmodern MAXXI building by Zaha Hadid awaited.

The highlight for many was Michelangelo’s ceiling frescoes and Last Judgement in the Sistine Chapel. Rosie reflected on the experience:

“Entering the Sistine Chapel was definitely a surreal experience. Because you are viewing it from below, it makes you feel as though the figures are alive and twisting and turning in motion in real time.”

Alongside the cultural discoveries, pupils enjoyed the gastronomy and shopping of both cities, embracing the full Italian experience while deepening their appreciation of art, architecture, and history.

A memorable trip that combined learning, inspiration, and the joys of travel for our budding art historians.
