Pathways & Possibilities: A Future in the Life Sciences

Cheltenham College offers an exceptional pathway for pupils aspiring to study Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Science, Pharmacology, and the wider life sciences. Within the STEM Faculty, the Biology Department equips pupils with the intellectual discipline, practical expertise, and scientific curiosity needed to address the biological challenges of the future, at a time when research in these fields is advancing at extraordinary speed.

The following pupils have all received offers for Life Sciences courses at top tier UK universities (from left to right):

  • Fernanda: Biological Sciences at The University of Edinburgh
  • Julia: Biology at The University of Manchester
  • Christina: Pharmacology at The University of Bristol
  • Avrille: Neuroscience and Psychology at King’s College London
  • Joie: Human Neuroscience at University College London

For pupils eager to understand the mechanisms that underpin life, the STEM Faculty provides a rigorous and inspiring programme that serves as an ideal launchpad into higher education and scientific careers. College pupils consistently secure places at leading universities, including University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, University of Edinburgh, King’s College London, University of Bristol, and University of Manchester. In recent years, successful Oxbridge applicants have undertaken independent research projects of publishable quality, with a number of pupils authoring peer-reviewed scientific papers. This culture of scholarship reflects the strength of the scientific method and academic foundations instilled at Cheltenham College.

The Biology course itself is a demanding two-year journey that builds deep conceptual understanding and technical competence. In the Lower Sixth, pupils establish a strong grounding in core topics such as cell biology, biological molecules, immunology, biodiversity, and evolution. As they progress, the curriculum expands into advanced biochemistry and the sophisticated regulation of the human body through neural and hormonal systems. Pupils also explore cutting-edge fields including epigenetics and microbiology, ensuring their knowledge remains aligned with the frontiers of modern science.

Practical science is central to the Faculty’s ethos. Pupils gain hands-on experience in techniques such as gel electrophoresis, microbiological culture, and field ecology, recording their progress in formal laboratory notebooks that support their Practical Endorsement. This emphasis on authentic scientific practice develops precision, independence, and confidence – qualities essential for success at university and beyond.

Beyond the classroom, the Faculty fosters a vibrant scientific culture. Pupils engage in research, academic societies, lectures, and enrichment opportunities that broaden their horizons and deepen their passion for the life sciences. Cheltenham College’s STEM Faculty is a place where curiosity is nurtured, ambition is supported, and future scientists take their first steps towards meaningful impact in the real world.

Our Pathways & Possibilities series celebrates the journeys of our pupils as they take their next steps beyond College, while supporting current pupils and parents with expert guidance along the way. Each week, we will share a mix of success stories and practical advice from our Higher Education and Careers team to help inspire and inform future pathways.
