Pathways & Possibilities: From DT Workshop to World-Class Design

We are thrilled to announce that Thee has secured a place at Kingston University to study Product & Furniture Design, a course globally recognised for its excellence, and one of the best product and furniture university courses in the UK.

To prepare Thee for challenging undergraduate study, College’s D&T department has fostered an environment that mirrors a professional design studio. The College curriculum prioritises advanced computational modelling, enabling Thee to master complex digital design skills alongside traditional manufacturing craftsmanship, making him stand out from the pool of candidates.

Thee designed an organic lamp shade out of interlocking laser cut sections of Valchromat which saw him flick between 2D CAD software and 3D CAD software, resulting in a portfolio piece. Thee has deep-dived into material properties to ensure every design is both functional and sustainable.

Thee has learnt to MIG weld, angle grind and use a wood lathe to create a stool in year 12 that encompassed a broad range of sophisticated manufacturing skills, showcasing his technical ability. The department has pushed the iterative design cycle giving Thee the prototyping skills needed to succeed at Kingston and beyond.

His final A Level project saw multiple iterations of complex folding compartments that swing out of a cylindrical stool which made Thee stand out as a designer with a strong methodology for innovation.

We wish him all the best and look forward to what he will design in the future.

Our Pathways & Possibilities series celebrates the journeys of our pupils as they take their next steps beyond College, while supporting current pupils and parents with expert guidance along the way. Each week, we will share a mix of success stories and practical advice from our Higher Education and Careers team to help inspire and inform future pathways.
