Pathways & Possibilities: Where Sport Meets Science
At Cheltenham College, we have taken a considered and structured approach to ensure Maddie is both well-prepared and highly motivated to secure her place to study Sport and Exercise Science at Loughborough University.
In addition to the formal curriculum, she has been exposed to pedagogical approaches that mirror those encountered in higher education, including lecture-style teaching and the completion of independent research projects. This has enabled her to develop critical thinking, academic writing, and data analysis skills essential for success in a sports science degree.
We actively encourage students to apply theoretical knowledge to their own training regimes and sporting performance. Maddie has engaged in this process wholeheartedly, demonstrating an ability to bridge the gap between theory and practice – an essential competency for laboratory work, physiological testing, and performance analysis within the field of sport and exercise science.
Through her involvement in academic societies and enrichment opportunities, Maddie has also engaged with contemporary developments in the discipline. She has attended lectures delivered by leading practitioners and researchers, including those exploring athlete transition following spinal cord injury, as well as workshops led by elite performers focusing on nutrition, recovery, and the application of performance-enhancing technologies. These experiences have broadened her understanding of the interdisciplinary and evolving nature of sports science.
Alongside this, Maddie has done exceptionally well to be selected for the Gloucestershire Women’s Cricket playing squad this summer, whilst still at College. This is just reward for the drive and dedication that she has shown to her winter training programme, building on the back of a very successful season last summer for the Gloucestershire County U18s and for Bath CC Women’ s team – a highlight being Maddie’s score of 99 not out against Berkshire U18s. As a powerful hitter of the ball and exceptional ability in the field, Maddie’s skills have contributed to her early involvement in the Metro Bank One Day Cup side for Gloucestershire Women. We wish Maddie all the very best with her future studies at Loughborough.
Our Pathways & Possibilities series celebrates the journeys of our pupils as they take their next steps beyond College, while supporting current pupils and parents with expert guidance along the way. Each week, we will share a mix of success stories and practical advice from our Higher Education and Careers team to help inspire and inform future pathways.
