The Seagull

Pupils deliver a mature and compelling interpretation of Chekhov’s classic

Cheltenham College pupils delivered a superb production of The Seagull by Anton Chekhov, captivating audiences with a thoughtful and assured performance in Big Classical.

The talented cast brought this classic play vividly to life, exploring its enduring themes of love, ambition and artistic struggle. From the intensity of Konstantin’s frustrations to the layered complexities of Arkadina and Nina, pupils demonstrated impressive emotional depth and a clear understanding of the play’s nuance.

Set against the backdrop of a country estate, the production skilfully examined the tension between traditional and emerging forms of theatre. Moments of poignancy were balanced with quiet humour, creating a performance that was both engaging and reflective.

The play was particularly notable for the maturity with which pupils handled its more complex and sensitive themes. Senior thespians took centre stage, delivering performances that were at once confident, controlled and deeply expressive.

This striking production is a testament to the hard work, creativity and dedication of all those involved, both on stage and behind the scenes.
