Sports Coach (Hockey)
From September 2025, Cheltenham College seeks to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated Hockey Coach. Although the individual could be required to coach up to full-time hours over the course of the week, there is a particular need for Saturday and Wednesday afternoons.
Experience as an athlete at a high-performance level is desired but not essential. Previous coaching experience is essential, coupled with an enthusiasm and passion for the sport of Hockey.
Due to existing staff ratios, we do require a female coach for safeguarding/compliance purposes.
Our Hockey programme is shaped around the pupil and looks to create challenging and fun environments. At the Senior School, the pupils will receive dedicated, specialist training three times a week from our experienced Hockey coaching staff as well as having fixtures on a Saturday.
At the Prep, girls’ Hockey takes place in the Autumn Term with boys’ Hockey taking place in the Spring Term.
Key Responsibilities:
- Under the guidance of the Director of Hockey and Head of Games, plan and deliver high-quality coaching sessions across the Prep and Senior School
- Take responsibility for leading school teams in fixtures, particularly on Saturday and Wednesday afternoons, with cup matches played midweek.
- Mentor and motivate students to develop their athletic ability, discipline, and sportsmanship.
- Ensure safeguarding, health and safety, and welfare of all pupils is prioritised during coaching sessions and fixtures.
- Provide constructive feedback and contribute to player assessments where required.
Who we are looking for / Person specification:
- A background in coaching Field Hockey is essential, preferably with school-age children
- A coaching qualification in Hockey (e.g England Hockey Coaching certificate or equivalent)
- Outstanding teaching and coaching skills with a genuine enthusiasm for sport and a commitment to pupil development.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with pupils, parents, and staff.
- Experience of coaching and/or playing at a high level (e.g. national league, international, or equivalent) is desirable, but not essential
- A sense of drive and proactivity
